Park District Voters Say No to Tax Rate Request

Impact on homeowners would have been less than $50 a year, park district officials said.

With bonds for the Sanctuary Golf Course to be paid off next year, the New Lenox Park District hoped to hold onto the extra taxing power. But two-thirds of voters Tuesday said "no."

The no votes stood at 2,691 to 1,440 in favor with 18 of 21 precincts counted as of 9:45 p.m., according to unofficial results. The district hoped to use the funds in housing developments waiting for a neighborhood park, to improve Americans with Disabilities Act compliance and to acquire land.

The district will not longer be entitled to the extra 6.2 cents per $100 of assessed value once the bonds for the golf course are paid off in 2015.
