Park District Voters Say No to Tax Rate Request

Impact on homeowners would have been less than $50 a year, park district officials said.

With bonds for the Sanctuary Golf Course to be paid off next year, the New Lenox Park District hoped to hold onto the extra taxing power. But two-thirds of voters Tuesday said "no."

The no votes stood at 2,691 to 1,440 in favor with 18 of 21 precincts counted as of 9:45 p.m., according to unofficial results. The district hoped to use the funds in housing developments waiting for a neighborhood park, to improve Americans with Disabilities Act compliance and to acquire land.

The district will not longer be entitled to the extra 6.2 cents per $100 of assessed value once the bonds for the golf course are paid off in 2015.

@committee member. I have lived here all my life. I didn't need this crap then or now. Its a waste of my hard earned money. The people moved here for our cute little down and once here they are trying to turn it into mini Chicago and ruined it.

@commitee member. Heres an idea. Charge a fee to all these people who want all these fancy activities and leave us tax payers and senior citizens on fixed income out of it. See how bad they want it if they have to pay every time

I do have young children in the village and we enjoy going to the park. I also live in an older, established neighborhood and we do a lot of park maintenance ourselves. Need the mulch put in? Deliver it and we take care of it. Need a grill or electricity at the pavilion? Our residents raise the funds and have them installed at the park. Last year the park was looking overgrown so our neighborhood paid to have a professional landscaper come out and clean the entire area up. Our residents paid to maintain park district land. But, if we need to reserve the pavilion or use the grill the park district is quick enough to hold out their palms for the required fee. In the summer, I sign my kids up for swimming lessons through the Lockport Park District. They get the enjoyment of a fun pool that is outside with slides and other fun features. Why would I want to pay more money? I think I have paid enough. If other neighborhoods want stuff in their park, let them do what we did and help raise the funds.

Comittee Member: So you are aware, the NL Community Park District provides cushy jobs for my friends and family? What is the balance sheet of that golf course investment look like? Quite a bit of red ink, I'd imagine. Maybe we should open a water park because Tinley Park did it... We could be just like the big-boys: The operating budget of the Tinley Park-Park District for 2012-13 is $8,478,000. The budget for Capital Projects is $3,009,000 and for Debt Services is $1,939,000. The Tinley Park-Park District employs 29 full-time employees and 163 part-time employees and approximately 190 seasonal employees.....................Funny, it's all about $$$ compensation and getting more cash, not improvements or upgrades:http://www.newlenoxparks.org/pdcms/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/budgetminutes062012.pdf

Exactly, Lenny. "It's for the children" triggers a lot more skepticism than it used to. And thank goodness for that.
