Celtics Rebound After Loss with a Vengeance: Providence Defeats St. Rita Sophomores 14-0

High School Sophomore Football: Providence Celtics 14, St. Rita Mustangs 0

The Providence Catholic Celtics sophomore football team (4-1) won 14-0 over the St. Rita Mustangs with a vengeance.

Early Bird Gets the Worm - Fullback David Kaminski punched in the pigskin from the two-yard line to make the score 7-0 Celtics in the first quarter on a play that was set up by a 12-yard rush from Dominic Lagone the prior down.

"Coming out and scoring on the first drive was key to gaining the momentum we needed to spoil the Mustangs' homecoming," said wide receiver Brandon Denler who has two touchdown catches for the season.

Game Changer - After a Noah Cralle interception the Celtics offense found themselves on the St. Rita 44-yard line.  Providence wasted no time turning their good field position into a score as Sam Abraham connected with Brian Leonard on a touchdown pass the first play of the drive to make the score 14-0 Celtics.

Lights Out Defense - The Providence defense was able to keep their opponent from scoring for the second time in the five games they have played thus far this season.  On fourth down, the Mustangs were 0/5 throughout the game.

"The way we came out in the first half of the Loyola game very much motivated our whole team, not just the defense," said captain David Kaminski.  "Our goal is to be conference champs, and we needed to win this game for that to happen.  We wanted to take it to Rita, so we brought our best on the first play."

Running Away With the Game - On the Celtics last three possesions of the game they handed the ball off to running back Dominic Lagone seven times for a total of 21 yards (3 yards per carry) and also gained ten-yards on a screen pass to run out the clock.

Musical Chairs - Three different quarterbacks took snaps during the game as regular starter sophomore Jake Godfrey sat out in preperation for the varsity game.

What's Next - Providence plays host to the Brother Rice Crusaders at home 5 p.m. Friday Sept. 30.
