Union Workers End Strike at Silver Cross Hospital

Members of the Sprinkler Fitters Local 281 went on strike May 31 after their contract expired, but a tentative agreement was reached Tuesday.

Following a union strike that temporarily shut down some construction at the replacement Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, workers were back on the job Wednesday.

The Sprinkler Fitters Local 281 union went on strike June 1 after their contract with the National Fire Sprinkler Association Contractors expired and a new one had not been negotiated.

Following a month of negotiations, the union reached a tentative agreement, pending ratification by members, that sent its members back to work Wednesday morning.The union was working on the but stopped just for a few days, hospital spokeswoman Tracy Simons said.

The hospital is set to open Feb. 26, 2012, and Simons said the brief strike did not affect that target date.
