TM Tires Coming to New Lenox, Job Opportunities

TM Tires is expanding its operations and opening a 24,000-square-foot facility along Gougar Road in New Lenox. The facility both sells repaired tires and produces retreaded/recapped tires.

Tom Accomando, shop manager at TM Tires Co., said the company is hoping to open its combination warehouse and production facility in April or May. At the moment, he's awaiting final authorization by Will County officials.

In the meantime, TM Tires has gotten the green light from the Village of New Lenox to open a facility that is about 40 percent larger than the company's plant in Crestwood. TM Tires focuses on tire repair, serving commercial, industrial, intermodal and international, as well as regional private vehicles.

What attracted TM Tires to New Lenox is its proximity to the Interstate highways, said Mayor Tim Baldermann. With Interstate 80, Veterans Memorial Highway (I-355) and near proximity to other major roadways, the industrial sites along Gougar Road near Providence Catholic High School satisfied the company's needs.

What makes TM Tires particularly attractive to Baldermann is the company's investment in the community. "You want people who are really vested in the community." And TM Tires fits the bill.

TM Tires, which opened its doors in 1982 and settled in Crestwood in 1994, is expected to start out with one shift in New Lenox. The new plant offers the company more room to work on its retreads. Instead of throwing old tires in landfills, Accomando said his company can retread them. Mostly, the retreads are for semi-trucks.

TM has been operating a line for retreading tires since 2002. "It's good for the environment," he said, and it's a market that continues to gain traction.

Since 1994, TM Tires has been processing tires for reuse. "We're taking the core of the tire and retreading it. We're saving it and reusing it."

A tire can be retreaded as many as three times, he added. "As long as the core is sound," then the tire can be reused.    

TM Tires is a family-owned company, said Accomando. His father, Thomas N. Accomando, is the company president, and he manages operations in the shop. "We're looking forward to coming to New Lenox."

At present, TM churns out about 2,000 retreaded tires a week at the Crestwood location. "We're running to shifts there." It remains vibrant, he added.

Already TM has been involved in the community. The company, which had a booth at the ShareFest 2012 Job Fair in September at the Village Hall, is expected to join this coming year's ShareFest 2013 Job Fair as well.

At the last job fair, a couple of people were hired on the spot, he said. In about 10 weeks, Accomando said he hopes to begin hiring to staff the New Lenox facility. It's going to take awhile to get things rolling, but he expects to hire between 25-40 people.
