Sustainable Home Development Hopes Outlet Mall Will Pay for Water

Prairie Ridge Estates in New Lenox planned for homes to produce as much energy as it used. But currently there is no water running to the site, and the developer doesn't want to pay to extend the line to the development near Interstates 80 and 355.

The Prairie Ridge Estates in New Lenox, announced a year ago, was a new-age housing development that planned for homes to produce as much energy as they consumed.

But without a water line extended out to the site, on the northwest end of town near Interstates 80 and 355, the 132-house development has stalled and is hoping for some help from the .

According to The Chicago Tribune, it was expected that another homebuilder would have extended the water main north from Route 6 by now, but the market crash kept the anticipated growth from happening.

The village secured a route for a water main, if developers Energy Smart Home Builders want to pay the estimated $400,000 to construct one. Developers could also wait nearly another year and tie into the outlet mall's water main for free.
