Driving School Eyes Second New Lenox Location

The A-Orland Driving School, located near Laraway and Nelson roads, is interested in the Hickory Creek Plaza across from Lincoln-Way Central but would first need a special use approval from the village.

The A-Orland Driving School, which already has one location in New Lenox, is eyeing a second spot closer to Lincoln-Way Central High School to perhaps pull in business from those young drivers.

Village Planning Administrator Robin Ellis said during a committee meeting Wednesday that first, the the village would need to amend its zoning ordinance to list driving schools as a special use.

Currently the Hickory Creek Shopping Plaza is zoned differently than what's allowed for driving schools, but Ellis recommended changing that.

The A-Orland Driving School is interested in moving into the far west side of the shopping center, giving it a location closer to Central. The current location is off Laraway and Nelson roads, closer to Lincoln-Way West, and it also operates through Providence Catholic.

Village trustees Annette Bowden and Dave Butterfield questioned the amount of parking needed for the driving school, but Ellis said it wouldn't be an issue.
