New Martial Arts Business Opens in New Lenox

Scott and Stacie Gebar have taught martial arts in the area for years, but now they've opened their own school: Velocity Martial Arts.

With at least 40 years of martial arts and group fitness experience between them, Scott and Stacie Gebar have opened a blended school in New Lenox that they say is unique in the area.

The school, located about half a mile north of Laraway Road at 21638 Schoolhouse Road, offers a variety of martial arts programs as well as group fitness activities such as turbo kick and cardio kickboxing.

"There isn't anything like that in the suburbs," Scott Gebar said. "We've taught hundreds of kids already, but we wanted the concept of a full family gym. This is our springboard for that. We have an environment that is family friendly."

That includes a level for all ages, as well as child care for parents who want their kids watched while they train.

The school opened about a month ago, Stacie Gebar said, but this weekend is its grand opening. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 16, the school invites the community to come by for the event, which features a bouncy house, push up and balance competition and a free Taekwondo and Group Fitness class. The will also be at the school and offering an opportunity to "touch-a-truck" for the kids.

"We plan to be a really big part of the community," Scott said, mentioning that he's reached out to local schools about programs as well as the Fire District to offer fitness and training classes.

Scott and Stacie have already been involved in the community for a while, having taught at other martial arts schools in the area and given private instruction.

Scott was a master fitness trainer with the U.S. Army, and he has more than 25 years of martial arts experience. Both he and Stacie hold third-degree black belts in taekwondo, among other accomplishments.
