Fire Guts House on Algonquin Street, East Joliet Fire Dept. Responds

Fire gutted a single-story house behind Mac's Tap Sunday morning at Algonquin Street and Copperfield Avenue.

Fire gutted a single-story house Sunday morning on the East Side of Joliet. No one was home at the time of the blaze.

The small home behind Mac's Tap, 607 Algonquin Street, was heavily damaged by smoke, fire and water, according East Joliet Fire Chief Robert Scholtes. The call came in at 9:56 a.m.

"When we arrived on the scene, we had fire coming out of the structure and heavy black smoke," Scholtes said.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation. Frankfort Fire Protection District investigators were evaluating the scene.

The owner of the property, Paulette McCarthy, said daughter 46-year-old Gina McCarthy, had left Wednesday night for the holiday weekend. The daughter was the only resident. Paulette and John E. McCarthy are the owners of Mac's Tap.

Scholtes was unable to estimate the amount of damage at the time of the fire.

Fire departments from New Lenox, Homer Township, Manhattan, Rockdale and Frankfort assisted.
