PHOTO GALLERY: Battle of the Bands Rocks Lincoln-Way

The Annual Team Asset Celebration began this weekend as local bands competed at The Hub in New Lenox for bragging rights and a $100 dollar gift certificate to Guitar Center.

Although he didn't win the Battle of the Bands, Sean Sheetz found himself  on stage twice during the Lincoln-Way High School Battle of the Bands this weekend.

After simultaneously playing drums and singing in his band Death by Jet Pak, Sheetz joined Scott Mitchell on acoustic guitar for another performance. On drums, he was like Phil Collins keeping perfect balance of the beat and belting out an amazing voice in such synch.

On guitar, Sheetz was the forth act up, singing a Tears for Fears song called Mad World beautifully with the audience singing along.

Sheetz was very humble about his talent but added that he also plays the piano, which, as it turns out, was his first instrument. After listening to Ben Folds Five as a 7-year-old, he told his mom that he had to play the piano, so she made it happen.

“My parents do not play any instruments but my mother is very much a music enthusiast," he said. "My older sister played the drums, so when I inherited her old drum kit I just taught myself how to play them.”

And as for the acoustic guitar, he just received it as a gift from his parents. He took some classes at his school but for the most part is still self taught and it's a relatively new instrument for him. And he's only been singing for about a year.

“Singing came to me eventually after so much repetition and practice”

Six Lincoln-Way High School bands displayed their musical talent on stage at this weekend to an energetic crowd of fellow students, family and friends. A panel of four judges critiqued bands in four areas: musicanship, cohesiveness, lyricism and audience appeal.

“I also listen for complexity, timing and uniqueness," judge Stephanie Hiller said.
