Food Pantry Starts 'Foods of the Month' Program

The food pantry is starting a new program this year – the “Foods of the Month.” The February food is canned beef stew. And, for those who try to shop the sales and could use some advance notice to better prepare and stock up, the March foods are peanut butter and spaghetti sauce.

Fire District Offers Babysitting Academy

The New Lenox Fire Protection District will be holding a Babysitting Academy for boys and girls ages 11-17 and will run twice a year. The class will have a maximum of 20 students and will run six consecutive Saturdays beginning March 5th and ending April 9th.

Lincoln-Way Wildcats Excel in Super Bowl Shootout

This past weekend teams from some of the best travel clubs in Illinois and Indiana spent quality time in Mokena, New Lenox and Frankfort playing more than 50 basketball games over two days. All were home in plenty of time for kickoff, although many were probably too tired to stay up and watch Glee after the Super Bowl. In the fourth installment of the Wildcats Super Bowl Shootout, girls’ teams in grades four through eight battled opponents until there was only one team standing as champion.

Lincoln-Way Students Compete at FBLA Conference

A number of Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 students took top honors at a recent Future Business Leaders of America Northern Area Leadership Conference in Gurnee. In addition, two students – Lincoln-Way Central junior Lisa Hipelius and Lincoln-Way North junior Imani Simmons-Elloie -- were elected to leadership positions.

Providence Catholic Cheerleaders Place 3rd in State

Providence Catholic High School held an all-school recognition assembly Monday to honor the varsity cheerleading team for taking third place at the Illinois High School Association’s State Tournament. The competition took place on Saturday, Feb. 5 at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington.

Silver Cross Replacement Hospital Seeking Art Submissions

Silver Cross will open its new hospital in New Lenox on February 26, 2012. The hospital is looking for professional artists from Chicago and surrounding suburbs to be part of this exciting project. If you are interested in submitting your work, e-mail melissa.davis@americanartresources.com.

Lincoln-Way Students Haul in Arts Awards

Twenty-six and 27 art students received the results of their hard labor recently from judges for the national Scholastic Art Competition. Approximately 1,431 pieces of artwork from 25 high schools were submitted to this year’s regional contest. Only 521 pieces were accepted for the national competition. The Gold Key winners will be placed in competition in New York in February.
