Relay for Life Stirred Some to Dance Over Their Survival

A total of 30 teams and nearly 300 participants came out for the New Lenox Relay for Life Event July 12-13 at Lincoln-Way West High School.

The 6th Annual New Lenox Relay for Life got one couple swaying to the music and out on the makeshift dance floor.

New Lenox's Karen and Ed Tatro, both cancer survivors, combined a bit of dancing and walking at the 12 hour event to raise funds for the American Cancer Society, as it works to battle and eradicate cancer.

Ed is a retired principal at Tyler Elementary School, 511 E. Illinois Highway, and he currently serves as a trustee on the New Lenox Public Library District, 120 Veterans Parkway.

His wife, Karen, chatted about the day her hair started to fall out due to the chemotherapy. "I called my sisters." One brought the razor to help shave off the remaining hair and the other took pictures. Then the three went out for lunch. Karen said the hair loss was simply part of the recovery process.

After a quick lap around the track at Lincoln-Way West High School, 21701 Gougar Road, the two later celebrated their survival by dancing to Jimmy Buffett's 1977 hit, "Margaritaville."
