Patriot Day Both Honors and Reaffirms

The New Lenox community marked Patriot Day with a solemn ceremony.

The Patriot Day Ceremony in New Lenox served to both honor those who lost their lives in the 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and reaffirm this nation's freedom.

At 9:11 a.m. Sept 9 at the Firefighters Memorial at the Village Commons, members from VFW Post 9545 and American Legion Post 1977 along with village, fire department and law enforcement officials spoke briefly.

During this solemn occasion, United Methodist Church of New Lenox Senior Pastor Jay Carr offered an historical review of tragedy that happened 12 years ago.

"True patriots gave their lives that day," he said.

New Lenox Fire Protection District Chief Jon Mead told the crowd, "While we are thinking about those that perished on that day, we should also be thankful as well—thankful that there are those still willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to protect us and preserve our way of life."

After Carr led the crowd in singing "God Bless America, military-clad veterans performed a 21-gun salute, which was followed by taps.
