Fifth Try's the Charm for Coffee Shop in Library?

The New Lenox Library's Board of Directors recently approved another coffee shop in the library.

Two Manhattan entrepreneurs are hoping their luck will be better than that of their predecessors.

Debbie and Mark Vejvoda will open Just 4 U Cafe at New Lenox Library—the fifth in 12 years to attempt bringing brews to the books.

The library board approved a one-year contract with the couple, whose shop will be open Mondays through Saturdays.

A sour economy and low traffic have been cited as the main reasons that Novel Brew, Windy City Espresso, Book and Bean Cafe and the Bookworm Cafe did not succeed in the space at Veterans Parkway.

“We felt if they (the Vejvodas) were willing to try it, we were willing,” library board president Lou Broccolo said during a meeting.

Just 4 U Cafe is expected to open in late April or early May. They'll serve both hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and other treats from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Library staff said the space was designed for a coffee shop, and they'd like to keep it that way. Patrons have said they want it, but need to support it.

They are brave- wish them well. A coffee vending machine would suit me fine, else a Bunn pot and comped coffee would be even cheaper for the library than a remodel.

who said anything about a remodel? I didn't read it in this article. Did I miss something? If that is happening I would think the landlord would charge enough rent to re-coup. Lets hope this works out for the new coffee shop. Certain people seem to be only happy when they're pissing and moaning. I would like to see something a little different than the franchises in New Lenox. This would be a nice addition.

Landlord? Oh, you mean the PUBLIC ? I'm sure higher rent will be the ticket to success - for the 5th biz in that location. lol. People go to the Library to take advantage of the FREE books and FREE Internet. They are not the $4 double-skim- half soy mocha latte crowd.

I wish them the best of luck, but like other people have commented, they need better hours. If you want to be a successful business owner, give the people what they want! Thats the only way a business will survive in this economy.

Because I love the idea of a little cafe in the library, I used to plan my "errand day" so that my library stop would be around lunch time. I would get my books then sit in the cafe and read a few pages while eating lunch. To me there always seemed to be a steady stream of customers during those times so I was surprised none of the previous cafes lasted. Hopefully this new one will have better success. But now that I have a kindle, I'm not in the library as often so I probably won't be a frequent customer at the new cafe either.
