Silver Cross Honors Doctors Gutierrez and Rinella for 40 Years of Service

Silver Cross Hospital recently honored two members of the Silver Cross Medical Staff, Dr. Daniel Gutierrez and Dr. Salvador “Sal” Rinella, for their 40 years of service to the Silver Cross Medical Staff.

Born and raised on Joliet’s Eastside, Dr. Daniel Gutierrez began his career at Silver Cross Hospital as a surgical orderly while attending Joliet Township High School. He graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago with his medical degree.  The Manhattan resident completed his internal medicine residency at Hines Veterans Hospital before heading off to Malawi in central Africa to serve as a medical missionary.  Dr. Gutierrez was then sent to Vietnam with the U.S. Army where he tended to wounded soldiers and staffed medical clinics for South Vietnamese citizens.  He started in private practice in 1972 and today is caring for patients at the Will County Community Health Center. At Silver Cross, he served as Chief of Staff, Director of Continuing Medical Education and Chairman of the Department of Medicine as well as the Credentials Committee. He also was instrumental in initiating the Joliet PPO.

In addition to his important contributions over the past 40 years to the Silver Cross Medical Staff, Dr. Gutierrez has served as a member of Silver Cross Hospital Board of Directors since 1998.  He was the first physician to lead the Board serving as Chairman from November 2007 to May 2010. During his time, Silver Cross was building a replacement hospital at I-355 and Route 6 in New Lenox. As a member of the Board of Directors, he represented the interest of the hospital’s medical staff serving on several committees including Corporate Strategy, Governance and Management Effectiveness, and Quality and Cost Effectiveness Committees. His leadership extends beyond Silver Cross’ walls as he has served as the former Medical Director of the Will County Health Department and Past President of the Will-Grundy Medical Society. For his contributions to the health profession, he was presented with the Silver Cross Sehring Medal of Excellence in 1999.

 

Salvador Rinella, M.D.

Dr. Salvador “Sal” Rinella was born in Chicago and currently resides in Flossmoor. He graduated from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood with his medical degree.  He completed his residency at St. Francis Hospital of Evanston and is board certified in both radiology and nuclear medicine. During his military service, he served 2 years in the United States Navy as part of the Berry Plan from 1967 to 1969. As part of the Navy, his first year was spent on the Nuclear Ballistic Missile Submarine, USS John C. Calhoun, SSBN 630. He subsequently, spent the 2nd year as the first and only assistant to the Chief of Dependent Surgery at the Charleston Naval Hospital, Charleston, South Carolina.

Currently, he is a senior partner with Associated Radiologists of Joliet.

 

In addition, over the past 40 years as a member of the Silver Cross Medical Staff, Dr. Rinella has served as Chief of Staff at Silver Cross Hospital and on many medical staff committees including Cancer and Bylaws Committees and the Tumor Board.  He also served three terms as Chair of the Department of Radiology. For the past 7 years, he has represented the medical staff on the Silver Cross Hospital’s Board of Directors. He served on the Audit and Legal Affairs and Quality and Cost Effectiveness Committees. Throughout his tenure, all of the committees he has served on have benefited from his thoughtful insight.

 

Besides serving as a leader at Silver Cross, his has spent the last 40 years grooming Silver Cross’ next generation of physicians including two of his 4 children—including Anthony Rinella, M.D., spine surgeon in Homer Glen, and Dan Rinella, orthotist on the Silver Cross Hospital campus.

They determine independently, based on their training and experience, the appropriate medical care for each patient.  Their services are separate from the charges for hospital facilities and support staff, and are billed separately by the physician or medical group with which the physician is affiliated.
