The HUB Opens its Doors to 'The Center'

The Center is made up of a group of teens that meet to enjoy live music, inspirational messages and a chance to hang out.

The group is scheduled to meet from 6:30-9 p.m. on Thursdays at The HUB, 1303 Schoolhouse Road. The facilities there are great, said Diane Short, spokesperson for the group. It's already set up for live music and small group settings.

What distinguishes The Center is its specific Christian focus, she added.

The Hub already operates in a manner that coincides with The Center philosophy. It welcomes kids—junior high school students and teens— to a place where they can relax in a safe atmosphere. They can just be themselves.

Because The HUB's activities are mainly scheduled on the weekends, it has opened its doors to The Center for one night a week.

The group dates back to 1961. It was referred to then as the Christian Youth Center, and it spearheaded teen outreach programs throughout Will County, according to Short. The initial ministry group folded in 1999.

But the ideals have never faded. The group stayed together, but it has been newly resurrected under the name, The Center. Be sure to check out The Center on Facebook.

The Center is managed and organized by volunteers, including an executive board of three business people, Rick Abbott, Kelly Corcoran and Wayne Downen. The current crop of 14 teen leaders is called "The Core," Short said.

Although the group is sure to attract a crowd from the Lincoln-Way communities, it's open to junior high school students and teens from throughout Will County, Short said.
