Announces October Program
Fire Safety, Fire Prevention and Fire Education for Senior Citizens
The Manhattan-New Lenox TRIAD for Seniors would like to invite senior citizens (age fifty and up) from the area to attend their monthly meeting on Thursday, October 25, 2012, at 1:30pm, at the New Lenox Fire Protection District Station #1, Administration Office, located at: 261 East Maple, New Lenox, Illinois 60451. We would like to draw your attention to the fact that for this month we are changing our meeting location to Station 1 in recognition of “Fire Prevention Month”.
We hope you are able to attend our October meeting. Our guest speakers will be Fire Prevention Public Educator Erika Leader from the New Lenox Fire Protection District and Public Education Coordinator Dawn Cupples from the Manhattan Fire District. The October TRIAD will deal with fire safety as it applies to senior citizens in regards to fire prevention and education.
Did you know?
The fire death rate among people over the age of 65 is twice as high as the national average, according to the United States Fire Administration (USFA). In addition, the fire death rate among people between ages 75 and 85 is three times the national average and after age 85, it increases to four times the national average. These statistics are especially alarming when researchers estimate that by 2030, the 65 and older population will exceed 70 million people.
Adults 65 years and older can reduce their fire death rate by changing five major fire safety habits:
Change Smoke Alarm Batteries
Change or Update Escape Routes
Change Unsafe Smoking Habits
Change Unsafe Cooking Habits
Change Unsafe Heating Practices
