Water Rates in New Lenox Reflect Restructured Fee Schedule
The Village board approved a water rate change and established a $32 monthly service charge.
The increase in the cost of water is bound to start a trend, both tightening faucets and running them less.
The New Lenox Village Board Monday approved an ordinance to increase the price tag for water on a graduated scale and establishing a $32 monthly water line charge.
Instead of the 6,000 gallon minimum, "we've restructured the water rates so that the line charge covers the cost of delivering the water to your household or business," said Kurt Carroll, village administrator. With the new fee structure, some people will actually realize a lower rate. People who use only 1,000 gallons a month will see a reduced rate.
Infrastructure improvements in Chicago and Oak Lawn are moving forward. The upgrades carry a price tag of $100 million-plus. The ripple effects have spread throughout the southwest suburbs.
The restructure fee schedule features three levels:
Level 1: less than 9,000 gallons of water used a month will cost 3.59 per 1,000 gallons used
Level 2: 9,000 to less than 20,000 gallons of water used a month will cost $4.59 per 1,000 gallons used
Level 3: 20,000 gallons and over of water used a month will cost $7.00 per 1,000 gallons of water used.
Additionally, in order to keep pace with inflations costs of water production and distribution, the monthly water line charge is anticipated to increase by 5 percent annually, pending a yearly review of need by the Village board. Trustee Ray Tuminello insisted on an annual review just to make sure that the 5 percent increase is absolutely necessary.

If Chicago, Oak Lawn or Tinley Park increases its wholesale water rates after March 1, then New Lenox's rates will reflect the change. Chicago is also scheduled to raise its rates by 15 percent in 2013, 2014 and 2015, said Kurt Carroll, village administrator.
In April 2011, New Lenox residents got soaked with a $5 monthly increase on their bill. That was just the beginning. Village residents can anticipate rates rising steadily over the next three years, said Mayor Tim Baldermann.
"We're not making anything off of this," said Baldermann. It's all going to pay for infrastructure, which he said should have been conducted gradually over the years.
New Lenox taps into Lake Michigan via Oak Lawn, which moves it out to Tinley Park, Orland Park, Oak Forest and Mokena. Frankfort does not rely on Lake Michigan water. Instead it utilizes a system of aquifers.
Since Chicago and Oak Lawn are passing along the costs to its suburban users, the smaller municipalities are negotiating a fair rate that each will pay for improvements.

I agree with Dan. Florida here I come. We already pay 60, a month when we use zero water cause of minimum charges, Take that off and charge people only for what they use. Home Rule sucks

Is this article correct, $32 a MONTH more? That does not seem right.

That's what happens when Lake Michigan water was wanted.

Illinois is on the fastest sprint to worst place to live, no matter your age or income. Now we have multiple suburbs building multi million dollar village halls, police dept., and their own water parks which are approved without tax payers votes. But in the end the lenders are guaranteed payment even if that means raising the property tax to do it. Hmmm, this sounds familiar, look at our award winning village hall and soon to come police HQ and public works which I have no doubt will make Orland Park's look like small potatoes, but yet we do not have the population or needs to support this....we must be building for the "future". It doesn't matter if your bill goes up a dollar or 32, what is the percentage, who is making 15% to keep up, your investments, your home value, maybe your last salary increase? I thought not. The taxpayers better wake up before all the levels of politicians spend every dime our kids will ever make, they have already spent ours.

I couldn't agree more and IL, overall, is a joke. I too am going to try and get my kids out of this state and follow them where they go with the exception of other blue/bankrupt states. Again, spend, tax, spend, tax, spend tax. Joke.

Outrageous! With everyone getting hit with higher taxes...Now this... New Lenox and Mayor Balderman should be ashamed of themselves for even considering such a hike in water bills, especially when the public has no choice when these "infrastructure" changes take place and how much they cost. The minute I can sell my house, I'm getting out of Will County if not the state of Illinois.

Your water bill will reflect a $32 base with $3.59 for every 1,000 gallons that you use. It's not a $32 monthly increase.

This is still a rip-off...i use 1000 galloons of water and still getting a $53 bill. I moved to New Lenox because I heard good things about the area and i thought Cook county was bad.

How about the Will County politicians and/or New Lenox politicians take a pay cut to offset this? I'm tired of paying higher taxes / bills year after year while my house is worth nothing.

In process of moving to AZ from over rated New Lenox. Water rates are similar there but my property taxes there are $618.00 per year for a five yr old home in a nice area. Anyone looking for a home near the taj mah village hall? Probably not anyone from NL.

First of all, the journalism is a bit off on this article Ann. I am sorry, but when I first read it, I was very frustrated. It originally looked like the bill was going up 32.00. As a Senior Citizen, I think my bill may actually drop some. Before I was forced to pay for 6,000 gallons, plus the metering fee. Now it appears that I may only pay for what I use. I like the intentions. However, I do think the prices in which Chicago charges needs to be addressed. On our backs is not the way we should be balancing their budget up there.

Water rates are going up on almost everyone because most households average much more than 1,000 gallons a month.
Well water is not an alternative though even at this level. I can't deal with the rotten egg smell, the rust stains, or paying to have salt delivered.
That isn't free either.

Well water in my area is not as bad as you describe and even drinkable. I have no complaints whatsoever. But people in my area are on their own well, I think Frankfort(?) has a community well which I believe has the characteristics you describe.

What is the total monthly fee before the usage charge?
It can't be only $32. Please check this and correct the article if necessary.
