Patrick Mizwicki, of New Lenox, died at age 14 last year after he was struck by a car while running in a forest preserve in Palos Township. A new foundation will hold its first event, a 5K run/walk.
The family of a Lincoln-Way East freshman who died last year has set up a scholarship foundation in his name and will have its first event next month.
Patrick Mizwicki, of New Lenox, died Sept. 15, 2011, after he was struck by a car while running in a forest preserve in Palos Township. He was 14.
He was a freshman at Lincoln-Way East High School, where he was on the cross-country team, and he also played baseball for the Frankfort Eagles.
"The goal of the Foundation is to carry on the memory of Pat Mizwicki; to promote values such as: sportsmanship, hard work and determination; to encourage kids to be a friend to everyone," according to the foundation's website.
The first fundraising event for the foundation is a 5K run/walk on May 19. The deadline to register is Friday, April 20. Register here.
Registration costs $20 and includes a T-shirt. The race will begin at 9 a.m. May 19 at Frankfort's Breidert Green.
