Prime Time Restaurant and Bar Closes Its Doors
The lights are out at Prime Time Restaurant and Bar.
No public announcement was made when Prime Time Restaurant and Bar closed earlier this week. The doors to the restaurant, set back from Route 30 at Joliet Highway, are locked and the lights are off in the bar where big screen TVs would normally be tuned into football, basketball, hockey or baseball games.
The owner, Angelo Gellis, was unavailable for comment.
Not quite two years old, the restaurant had its share of problems. Setting up shop in the former Bluestone Restaurant immediately posed a problem for Gellis. The former restaurant regularly sparked the ire of residents from the town home subdivision across the street. Loud music and bar room disagreements that ended in brawls outside left nearby residents concerned that the same situation would mark Prime Time's existence.
While the fear of loud music and outside disturbances was not repeated at Prime Time, Gellis still had problems making a profit. Try as he might, he was unable in the late summer of 2011 to convince village trustees to grant an hour extension to the 11 p.m. liquor license.
At a regular village meeting in September 2011, Gellis appealed to the board to consider his plight. "People were just disappointed. It was hard to tell them to go home in the middle of the game," Gellis said. "If a game goes into overtime they want to stay and watch. If they already know you close at 11 they might not come in for the game at all."

At the same time, residents from Bluestone Bay town homes showed up to express their concerns about extending the restaurant's liquor license. Their memory of the former Bluestone Restaurant had left a bad taste in their mouths when it came to a restaurant that catered to the sports crowd. New Lenox police were regularly called to handle disturbances in the parking lot.
While the board refused to extend the liquor license, they did approve Gellis' request to keep the restaurant open an additional hour from 11 p.m. to midnight during the week and till 1 a.m. on the weekends.
Mayor Tim Baldermann said he strongly suspects the matter of the liquor license diminished Gellis' profit margin. "The location is difficult for a business that feels like it relies on a sports crowd.
"Because it's in a residential neighborhood, you have to respect the residents there." The village board was not going to extend Prime Time's license for that reason, Baldermann said.
Still, the location is "great" for a restaurant that caters to a general clientele.
The recent closure of two restaurants in town, Prime Time and Charley Horse Restaurant in early February, doesn't have the mayor worried. "We've had some very strong interest in the Charley Horse Restaurant."

What is it with New Lenox? Seems like a restaurant just can't make it in this town. Why is that? My guess is, people move to New Lenox because of the schools, and they can't really afford the real estate taxes, and prices in general to live in this town. Its a shame, Frankfort is thriving and New Lenox seems to struggle, then fail.

Really Kimberly??? Get a clue! New Lenox has had way more success then Frankfort...Silver Cross, Walmart, Portillos, low foreclosure rates, way more houses being built etc!!!! Another anonymous idiot!

Location Location Location...that spot is a terrible location for a Bar and Grill.
What may survive is a Breakfeat/lunch restaurant, a Bakery, or change type of fast food, something that closes early as it is too close to a residental area.

Honestly I'm glad that they closed. I ordered a cheese burger about a month ago (haven't been back their since) I called in my order and when I went to pick it up I brought it home and noticed my cheeseburger had no cheese on it. and they gave me butter instead of mayo. I called and asked if I could bring the burger back and get one with cheese on it. the manager said no but you can come get a slice of cheese.. Really? The manager even said it was his fault and he heard me on the phone say American cheese cause he asked me what type of cheese I wanted.. But i really did like their lemon drop martinis and I loved their burgers and the people who worked there were all very polite. Then this happened and I never went back again.

Yeah, if a restaurant ever dared to screw up my cheeseburger, I would call the SWAT team and have that manager brought up on charges. The nerve of some people! How is your counseling going by the way Katiemarie? Are the nightmares subsiding a little?

If you mess up someones order then you make it right for the customer. If the customer wants a new burger because you messed up then you give them a new burger. You don't give them a piece of cheese so they have to microwave it at home. If I got to cook my own cheese then I might as well make the whole damn burger at home. HELLO!

NL4LIFE, you sound like you know how to run a restaurant. There are plenty of empty ones to take over now. Having a bad expirience at a restaurant is not the end of the world is it? To celebrate a business closing because some whiner couldn't eat a hamburger because there was no cheese on it is a little over the top. Of course, I am probably addressing members of the entitlement generation so never mind.

GET A CLUE KIMBERLY......
Have you actually ate at Primetime before? Well I have and it was an extremely bad experience. Just because someone opens a bar/restaurant, doesn't mean they are going to be an automatic success. You have to run a good bar/restaurant to make it anywhere. Primetime had poor management. We sat down to order steaks that were on special and witnessed 3 gentlemen bring Moe's Chinese Food into the establishment and sit down at the bar and start eating. Then we got our steaks and they were the fattiest steaks I have ever seen. I spoke to the manager seen in the picture and he made all kinds of excuses before he game me my money back. I never went back and that's why places like this close.
You want an example of a well run bar/restaurant then go to Tribes Alehouse.

This poor guy lost his business because of reputation of the place and how the guy ran it before? Way to go board on trusting your constituents! Why couldn't you allow him to have the license he wanted and give him some ground rules that if broken he would have to pay\lose the license? Not place a Scarlet Letter on him.
I bet he bought the place thinking, "well hey I could run that place and knock out that stuff out and they would have no problem extending it after a year or so" .

Jason Pag....NOT TRUE. This guy sucked at running a bar/restaurant. You don't let people bring Chinese Food from Moe's into your restaurant if you want to stay open. The guy is clearly an idiot.

@NL4LIFE... That wasn't my point. My point was the Board shouldn't have dictated what license they issued him based on the previous owner. Regardless if he ran a good shop or not.

With all due respect Mr. Pag, the nearby residents of new lenox dictated his liquor license when they consistently expressed their concerns regarding noise level at the board meeting. When you buy an establishment near homes then you have to know what you are getting after the previous owners issues. With that being said, he closed because his establishment was poorly run. You can't blame others for this one.

We ate there once...that was enough. The shrimp we ordered was supposed to be fresh -so the waitress said- it wasn't...it was the frozen crap you can get in any Sam's Club. The other entree ordered wasn't much better but the shrimp fiasco really sticks with me in my memory.

What did the people who bought houses near Route 30 business district think was going to happen? Did they expect it to be a library and a convent?

The original plans for the Target, lowes, etc area was another subdivision. It had a name and plans and everything until the village did a switcheroo And didnt bither to tell people, even those who specifically askd about it a few months before construction. google and youll find several village meetings and upset residents. So, people bought homes thinking they would be surrounded by another subdivision, not strip malls and Lowes.

I am sorry but people who live in bluestone bay subdivision are a bunch of cry babies. Many people built/bought there after the Bluestone Bar and Grill was already open. Then they go cry about it at the meetings. I feel it is horrible what the residents did to this small business. Never even gave him a chance. What a shame! There is nothing that will open there that will work. They may as well open a dollar store. The residents of Bluestone Bay will like that. Good luck!

Oh, and I forgot to mention. With Prime Time closing this is a lot less tax money that New Lenox is going to receive. Hopefully Bluestone Bay and the rest of us do not have to pick up the slack!!

It would have been great if Prime Time could have been a success but essentially, if you're a restaurant, you need to have good food to survive. End of story.

Angelo is a good guy trying to make a living. he was very accommodating to us. too bad prime times surrounding neighbors were clueless. Enrico's will not make it there BC the neighbors will complain about the same things they've complained about with the previous 2 restaurants. whomever you are please do us all a favor and crawl back in the hole you came out of.

Bluestone Baybies do whine an awful lot.
Any of those recent subdivisions that built along Lincoln HIWAY should have known it was the business district. There was a reason it was cheaper to own there. If you didn't realize that was a business area, sue your realtor for failing to disclose the defect.

Perfect spot for a HoneyJam Cafe! It's breakfast/lunch and won't disturb the houses nearby. It would thrive and be a nice place for people who live by to walk to. Gotta contact Dick!

The RT 30 construction killed Charlie Horse
NL4LIFE

There are a few comments on here that are clearly coming from Friends or Family of the Owner. Also, Rt 30 didn't make Charleyhorse close down. If that was the case then all businesses along RT30 would be closed also. Did RT 30 close down his Tinley Park Location also? ANSWER: NO!
It's real simple people so pay close attention:
1. If you open a business then you must take responsibility for the successes and failures of that business. You can't point the finger at others when customers stop coming to your place of business because of terrible food or poor service. SO QUIT THE CRYING AND THE EXCUSES BECAUSE IT SOUNDS PATHETIC. YOU'RE MAD!
2. Nobody makes anyone open a restaurant or any business. If you aren't good at running a restaurant then take time to learn. Sometimes it's as simple as caring about your customer, hiring good chefs, training and supervising the wait staff. Clearly the Owner of Primetime doesn't care about his customers or the quality of food. Also if you were the guys who brought in the Chinese Food from next door then you know he had crappy food.
3. Primetime is just one of many restaurants/bars that come and go in the world. New Lenox is no different than the rest of the world. The Owner of Primetime didn't invent the concept of "Dumb Business Owner."
4. Watch Restaurant Stakeout on Food Network and see how to fix a crappy restaurant.

FINAL POINT...If you open a bar/restaurant with an 11pm Liquor License and then blame the 11pm Liquor License for the reason you closed then you are clearly an idiot. You could have opened a bar/restaurant anywhere but you chose that one. Dumb!

An 11 pm closing time for a bar, especially a sports bar is certain death. Not only do people want to see the entire event, they want to sit around and talk about it while having a beer. Joliet bars are open later than that. I understand it is close to a neighborhood, but most bars are... I think the village needs to be a little flexible on some of these things. Yes, New Lenox is a great place to live, but you can't get a decent meal after 10pm... You can't get a pizza in this town after 10 pm in most cases. Weekdays its 9 pm...

Angelo was a nice guy, and he always treated us well. The food was much better than bluestones, and he had some great specials. I think his biggest problem was with the young crowd still hanging there just like bluestone had. I doubt anyone will make another attemp at a bar/resurant at this location.
