UPDATE: Police Arrest Former D210 Employee for Outstanding Warrant

Michael Angel also was charged with obstructing justice after fleeing a Frankfort Police officer Tuesday. 'I got scared, and I ran away,' Angel told a judge Wednesday.

  • UPDATE (4:27 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30): Information on Michael Angel's bond hearing.

A former Lincoln-Way High School District 210 employee accused of trespassing on school grounds after being fired was arrested by Frankfort Police on Tuesday on an outstanding failure-to-appear warrant that was issued this month.

Michael J. Angel, 42, of Frankfort, also was charged with obstructing justice after he fled from an officer who saw him entering an apartment complex on Nebraska Street on Tuesday, said Commander Kevin Keegan.

When the officer approached him, Angel fled on foot and was eventually apprehended in the 100 block of Center Road, Keegan added. He was brought to Will County Jail and released on $675 bail.

At Angel's bond hearing Wednesday, the judge asked him why he didn't obey the police officer.

"I got scared, and I ran away," Angel said.

The judge then set a $2,500 bail for obstruction of a peace officer, in addition to the $675 he already paid.

Angel was charged earlier this year with two counts of criminal trespassing on property at Lincoln-Way Central and Lincoln-Way East high schools, but he failed to appear in court twice, according to Will County court records.

On Aug. 16 Angel changed his initial plea to guilty, receiving one-year supervision, fines of $600 and permission to coach youth football on school grounds on certain weekdays in the fall, court records show.

However, state prosecutors scheduled another hearing on Aug. 30 to ask that Angel receive permission from D210’s superintendent before stepping on school grounds again.

Court records show that Angel did not attend the follow up hearing, nor did he attend a supervision hearing scheduled Nov. 15. Prosecutors are now seeking to revoke the judge’s Aug. 16 sentencing.

Angel last worked for the district a few years ago, but a security guard at Central told police he had seen Angel's van parked at the school on multiple occasions. At 3 a.m. on April 19, he took down the license plate.

Angel told police he was looking for a box he left at the schools that contained personal paperwork.

Each count of criminal trespassing, a Class B misdemeanor, carries a maximum penalty of six months in Will County Jail, with optional probation, or a maximum fine of $1,500.

Thanks for keeping the public updated on this. We wouldn't have heard about this otherwise, since the school kept this news from us.

Huh? What does LW have to do with keeping this out of the news? They aren't the news. It's not like he is a current employee and a cover-up was attempted. It's in the news because a media outlet decided to report it finally.

Mike is a good guy and a great coach. This is a big misunderstanding. Mike, clear your name and stay strong. You still have support in this town.

A good guy? Really??? There is NO misunderstanding. There was a reason he got fired and that was kept quiet. There was no misunderstanding then either. He got away with too much for too long and now he has to pay the piper.

Yeah. Giving repeated chances and hiding heads in the sand has worked really well for sports recently, right? Get him some help that he obviously needs, and keep him away from kids.

He never got fired from Lincoln-Way. Why don't you contact Lincoln-Way. He was offered a better job.

Correct Information. He was not fired, you are correct. However, he only was offered a better job because Lincoln-Way helped him find that better job after they paid him to go away for the rest of the year because he was caught on camera stealing money. Lincoln-Way didn't reveal this information to the public, as is normal practice within the district.

The union fought for Mike, and the school district does not have any backbone in standing up and firing somebody caught on camera stealing money. They asked him to leave and not come back, while they paid him the remainder of his contract, and helped him gain employment with another district.

I only wish LW would be truthful with the taxpayers.

Exactly...I guess he was forced out but not technically "fired." He was fired in spirit though simply because the district likes to avoid bad publicity. The fact that they helped him find another position is sickening though, because if LW is supposed to be all about kids, then how could they send someone to work with other kids on their recommendation? In my opinion it's like LW saying that he isn't good enough to work with our kids....but THOSE kids? Sure...as long as he's not with ours..
Just wrong.
