New Lenox Sees 37% Growth Over Last Decade

The U.S. Census data was released this week, and we start breaking into the numbers.

New Lenox's population has jumped 37 percent in the last 10 years, but the bulk of that growth came on the earlier half of the decade, according to the 2010 U.S. Census data released this week.

The village and township are still nearly all white (96 percent), but both are a bit more diverse now, having the white population drop from 98 percent in 2000. That's because minority groups have seen tremendous growth in New Lenox, including the black population (up 201 percent), Asian (up 186 percent) and Latino (a 148 percent increase). But don't let the percentages fool you; the overall minority population is still small comparitively, with 165 black, 186 Asian and 1,396 Latino residents.

Will County had the largest population bump of any county in the state, with a 35 percent increase, but still slightly smaller than New Lenox's growth. However, most of New Lenox's growth came between 2000 and 2007, just before the housing slowdown.

In 2008, the village had a special census conducted and the overall population has increased by just 300 residents in the last three years, Mayor Tim Baldermann said. See the video at the top of the article to hear what Baldermann thinks of the village's growth.

Earlier this year, data from the American Communities Survey was released to offer a glimpse into five-year estimates of various economic and social indicators in the village.
