New Lenox Man Carrying Live Grenades Causes Evacuation at Lemont McDonald's
George Crocker of New Lenox is being held on $300,000 bond on weapons, drug charges.
Lemont Police evacuated the McDonald’s at 1152 State St. after discovering live grenades in a vehicle in the restaurant’s parking lot Sept. 16.
The explosive devices were discovered as police and Lemont Fire Department personnel responded to the report of a man passed out in his vehicle in the parking lot of the restaurant at about 9:30 p.m.
According to a press release from the Lemont Police Department, responding officers found a man lying outside the open door of a car, incoherent and unable to communicate with police or fire department personnel, who had also responded to the call.
While attempting to render first aid to the man, a police officer saw what appeared to be a grenade device on the center console of the man’s vehicle.
Lemont Fire Department transported the man, George Crocker, 39, of the 221 Haines Ave. in New Lenox, to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox while police evacuated the restaurant and surrounding area.
An investigation by the Cook County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad found a second grenade device in the vehicle and safely removed both devices and transported them to a safe location.
The department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) were notified and are assisting in the investigation. Authorities say field testing confirmed that both devices contained a military-grade high explosive compound and were capable of detonating.
Police report that officers also found suspected narcotics in the vehicle, and an investigation is ongoing to determine if any other unaccounted explosive devices were involved.
Crocker was charged with two counts of unlawful use of a weapon, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and two counts of possession of a controlled substance. He was held for processing and transported to Cook County Circuit Court in Bridgeview on Sept. 19, where his bond was set at $300,000. Crocker’s next court date is Oct. 9.
Editor's note: The above information was provided in a press release sent to Patch Sept. 26 by the Lemont Police Department.

Wow, they never look like you would expect. Newlenox gets more interesting (and dangerous) every year. Can't wait to find out what they will discover when they search his house. Major drug problems and now a nutjob with hand grenades while the NLPD keeps us safe from speeders. Good job guys!

How is it you are so quick to find a negative in our police? How is it you know what investigations as being conducted? Why must you always be so negative? In what really is a wonderful (not perfect) community, why must there be so much negativity?

Drugs and grenades don't mix, kids.
Wow. Talk about getting 'blasted'. Dude lives by a school, to boot. Wonder if he's ex-military or just into loud noises. Crazy stuff, here.

Hand grenades are made for the military. Most find there way into society by a military person stealing and selling them. But it could be decades old. WWII grenades still up in basements and garages as they were taken home as souvenirs.

They were decades old and the police forgot to mention that, he was in the process of moving and I highly doubt they found them in the pasenger seat they were probly in his trunk with the rest of his stuff, but they needed probable cause to search his car. I know he would have not been driving around with them if he knew they were capable of detinating and risking the chance of one pot hole could end it all. I'm sure if those were not in his car the cops would of said the pills were in the front seat to cover thier asses cause they had no right to search his car for a wellness check.

My mother just went down there to visit and waited 2 hour to be told it was not his visiting day which they had posted wrong on the web site, this just happend, you can't go whenever it convienent! You cant just call county and as to speak to you son, he has to call her but he won't! And as for bail if you so hurt why don't you contribute to the $30,000. Thats not chump change to some families! So maybe you should check your facts ,or mind your own business because obviously you don't known my family as well as you claim!

It's about time you are speaking up. Hope you can do this in court because he will need your mouth also to get out of it. I though I was the only one speaking up and sticking up for him because this is the only place I can speak my mind. The cops are a bunch of idiots who think they know everything and make a big deal out of it without getting their facts straight. That is why the patch needs to do some reseach and get the true story. This poor guy I know is so innocent. I am done writing and leaving comments. George will be in my prayers through this whole process.

The case won't be tried by the police OR here at Patch, so save your defense for court. The law-abiding citizens of L-way are tired of losers in our midst. Send him to Stateville, where he belongs.

I was at this guy's bond hearing. It's funny how much this story has changed from then. They make it sound like he was a crack or meth head. He had zanex that were not prescribed to him. How many crackheads do you know that drive mercedes. According to them he was outside his car crying that does not sound unconsious to me. Wonder how much of this story is fabricated.

If the charges are trumped-up, file a wrongful arrest charge against the police. Sue for defamation of character. Don't forget to sue the judge who put the $300,000 bond on this non-event. Sue Silver Cross, as well. Poor innocent fellow.

I know George and troubled with drugs he may be but he would never hurt a fly. EVER! George was one of if not my best friends for a long, long, time and it makes me very sad to hear this awful news. I know his entire family and I'm sure they are crushed by this. They are all good people. He is too smart for his own good but just somehow keeps making bad decisions. I hope he gets well and contributes again in some way, shape, or form. So, like his sister said, mind your own business and pray for the poor guy.

Geo's family members:
I have been involved in the treatment of individuals such as George for more than 30 years. The more a person uses ‘crystal meth’, the more they crave it, making it very difficult to quit. Continued use can result in rapid weight loss and malnourishment. Longer-term use of “crystal meth” can have a serious impact on the brain’s ability to process information, and can even result in structural changes to the brain. It can also lead to the development of a psychotic condition that is difficult to treat.
Please see that he gets the help he so desperately needs.
Lorraine
10:30 am on Tuesday, October 2, 2012
Dr Ken: or so you say. My family is not nieve to the effects of a "Crystal Meth User", if we thought George had a problem with meth we would have done every thing in our power to help him. The so called narcotics in his car were Zannex, so he might have a problem with that but he is not a meth head. He had a full time job working 60+ hours a week and everything to show for his hard work. The comments above come from people who don't know him or have not seen him in quite a few years. So like I stated above you don't know the full story or the circumstances of the situation. go back to your meth patients and try and save them!

Zannnexxx - xanex is a real problem drug. The way you blow it off shows you must be popping pills, too.

Lorraine,
I apologize if I have offended you, but denial isn't going to help this man. Judging from the police report, the glazed look in his booking photo and his gaunt appearance, I think there is more than Xanex (Zannex is abuser lingo) involved here. Street drugs can prematurely age a person.
Often times when a person is pushed to work 60+ hour-weeks, they turn to stimulants to keep up with the pace. It sounds like George is out-of-control and your home remedy for treating his disorders aren't working. Don't be afraid to seek help from a professional.
Lorraine

Well think what you want, truth is you don't know George or what his everyday appearance is! What may look gaunt or glazed to you may differ from someone who has seen him every day for their whole life! I'm not denying the fact that he has a problem, and I know I'm not the one to help him but I will defend by brother from being accused of what I know is not true!
