Nelson Road Extension Project Advancing

The Nelson Road extension project is moving forward.

The Nelson Road extension project is beginning to take shape, but accommodating pipeline companies and dealing with the landowner continues to complicate matters.

The plan to connect the south and north sides of town along Nelson Road entails the construction of a one-mile extension between Haven Avenue and Illinois Highway. The cost estimate is $4 million, according to Mayor Tim Baldermann.

Village Engineer Will Nash said they are in discussion with BP Oil, Inc. staff, attempting to come up with a design that both crosses the pipeline and runs parallel to it.

"You can do it. The issue is how close can you be when running parallel?" Restrictions guard the depth of the road where it crosses over the top of the easement, he explained.

The pipeline companies, which have owned the right-of-way since the 1920s or '30s, have been slow in responding to the village's outreach, said Kurt Carroll, village administrator, at the Dec. 11 board meeting. At the moment, the aim is to design a site plan that meets with their approval.

Nash shed no light on a time-table for completion of the project. "It's something we'd like to get done as quickly as we can."

Meanwhile, negotiations with Voss Properties, owner of the undeveloped acreage between Haven Avenue and Illinois Highway, are not yet cemented. However, the village and the property owner are still in communication, said Nash.

Living near the corner of Nelson and Delaney Rd., I am (selfishly?) rooting for this expansion to take place. Getting to the north side of town is now annoying with the zig-zags of cutting from Spencer, Gear and Veterans Parkway -- or dealing with the slow drag on Cedar or the excess of trucks on Gougar.

I'll be surprised if the extension actually materializes. From the above article, the only thing advancing is the Village spending money on a "plan" which means nothing. If the pipeline companies are slow to respond and there is no deal with Voss ..... then what is advancing? Please PROVE ME WRONG and put that extension in sooner then later/never.

Living on the far south side of town near Delaney and Nelson I have always felt "detached", that I live in "another town" (New Lenox South), by the simple fact that there is no really easy way to get to downtown New Lenox. Zig, zag, Zig, zag....I am tired of it and not putting my faith in a extension anytime in the near future (and we have lived here 10 years already out here in "nowhere land"). Another thought: Whats with the trains that cross Nelson? Aren't they NOT suppose to be blowing their horns at the crossing now?? The other night I heard four seperate trains sound their horns before crossing...go figure?

I want this more than anyone!! Having lived in New Lenox for 15 years and backing up to Gear. Which everyone seems to think they can "fly" down Gear to get either North or South. The speed limit was 25mpg when I moved in and then changed to 30mpg in the spring of 1998. I was forced to put up a fence to keep my children safe. The village kept telling me that once a subdivision goes in then Nelson will go through so that the builder could pay for it and obviously not the village. Well that was 15 years ago and we are still waiting. The train horns are a "real joke" especially at 3AM..
