Michael Hastings Wins 19th District State Senate Seat

The Democrat candidate's overwhelming lead in Cook County was too much for Republican Edgar Montalvo, who took Will County.

Democrat Michael Hastings defeated Republican Edgar Montalvo on Tuesday, Nov. 6, for the 19th District State Senate seat, a redrawn district that played musical candidates through the primaries and the general election.

"We smoked 'em," Hastings told the celebratory crowd at Georgio's in Orland Park. He thanked his supporters for helping him achieve a victory in the 19th district.

Although Montalvo won Will County with 18,267 votes, the GOP candidate from Tinley Park who didn't join the race until the summer couldn't overcome Hastings lead in Cook County, which was 41,327 to 13,266 with 90 of 93 precincts reporting.

Hastings now represents the redrawn district that was formerly occupied by state Sen. M. Maggie Crotty, D-Oak Forest, who dropped out of the race in late December, citing a desire to spend more time with her family. The new district represents Tinley Park, Orland Park, Oak Forest, Frankfort, Mokena and New Lenox.

In March's primary, Hastings defeated Tinley Park Village Board trustee Greg Hanson and looked to be running uncontested to represent the district because no candidates ran in the Republican primary. But Montalvo filed a petition to be put on the ballot to run against Hastings as a Republican and successfully fought an objection in July to be able to face the Democratic candidate.

Bummer. Where did Hasting get all that cash for signs and mailings? I think that I received a Hastings mailing every other day last week.
