New Lenox welcomed its newest police officer to the village Monday night.

James Hanson took the oath of office to officially join the New Lenox Police Department

He's a Marine who served from 2003 to 2008 and spent some time in Afghanistan. Hanson also has a bachelor's degree from Northern Illinois University and was a part-time officer with the DeKalb County Sheriff's Department, Chief Bob Sterba said.

I'm proud to say few have come more highly recommended than James," Sterba said, mentioning his work as a Marine. "It brings a sense of maturity and gravitas to the job that many young adults don't have."

Hanson gave a brief speech and thanked everyone at the meeting, where he was joined by his wife.

"We're very happy to be a part of this community now," he said.

Mayor Tim Baldermann said Hanson is replacing another officer who left the department. The department has 38 officers.
