Students used the Oct. 2 game as an opportunity to raise awareness--and a little money--for cancer research and treatment.

“This game was a great avenue to teach our athletes that there is something more to fight for other than a win or a loss,” said Mike Murphy, head soccer coach at Lincoln-Way North.

 “As a coach, we stress sportsmanship and making the correct decisions on and off the field,” he added. “This game reinforced the true principles of interscholastic sports.”

Students raised $700 at the match by hosting a raffle. North’s soccer team raised an additional $135 by selling T-shirts.

Proceeds will be presented to the Silver Cross Foundation, which will use the money for cancer research and treatment.

This is was the fourth year that the Lincoln-Way North soccer team and Lincoln-Way West soccer team, coached by Jeff Theiss, have raised money for cancer research.

“The Lincoln-Way North and Lincoln-Way West soccer programs are grateful for the support we received from the community and parents,” said Murphy. “It is a great feeling to give back to the community.”
