Haunted New Lenox: Sanctuary Golf Course

Ready to get in the Halloween spirit? Read about some local places rumored to be haunted.

Why it's haunted: Borrowing an idea from the film Poltergeist, in New Lenox gained its spookster cred after bodies and Native American artifacts were unearthed years ago.

This has spurred reports of nightly tom-tom drum playing, fires burning in the tree line and spectral Native Americans canoeing along water hazards.

Why it's not: Golf course director Bob Schulz said it was only two bodies of nomads that were found among some pottery fragments, not an entire burial ground.

Either way, In fact, Schultz heard the tom-toms one fall night after work and decided to investigate. He found drums, all right. It's just that they were coming from marching band practice at , about 2 miles away.

"We're in a little valley here," Schulz said, "and the sound travels and drops in there."
