For this week's Chowdown Showdown, we skipped the meal and went right to dessert, trying pie in Frankfort, New Lenox and Mokena.

Local editors Joe Vince (Frankfort), Michael Sewall (New Lenox) and Paul Dailing (Mokena) tried a bowl at restaurants in their respective Patch towns.

Enrico's, Frankfort (3.5 of 5 stars)

The good: Fresh pie on a nice graham cracker crust, fluffy whipped cream. It's worth noting that the banana cream pie is the only pie that you don't need to order in advance. Enrico's offers whole pies—dark chocolate cream, coconut cream and fabulous cheesecake—with at least 48 hours notice.

The bad: The banana flavors competed with each other too much—the artificial banana flavoring in the pie filling (pudding) with real banana slices plus the dried banana chips on top were too confusing for my palate.

Prime Time, New Lenox (4 of 5 stars)

The good: Prime Time puts a nice twist on the traditional apple pie by drizzling it with caramel—making it a caramel apple pie! The cinnamon in the apples wasn't overpowering, and the pie came a la mode.

The bad: The pie crust wasn't crispy, and that was before the ice cream made it even a bit more soggy.

Double Yolk Pancake House, Mokena (5 of 5 stars)

The good: Oh, man. The cherry pie was awesome; sweet, but with a hint of tartness. Whipped cream on top. It tastes so good, makes a grown man cry. Sweet cherry pie. (Part of this review might be Warrant lyrics.)

The bad: Nothing really bad about the pie itself, but here's a protip for ordering: Pie's not actually on the menu. You have to see what's in the case by the door when you come in and order a slice of that when you're at your table.
