Clearly the younger generation isn't getting the message as well as it seems we did regarding drugs. Whatever happened to the "This is your brain" ads. Not like they always work but it seems like you don't even see anything like that anymore. Has America just given up on the wage against drugs entirely? Tragic.

Sadly, the federal government doesn't feel that the issue of drug education via programs like DARE, Operation Snowball and others are not worth funding.

I can't believe how judgemnental and uneducated people are today on addiction. DARE does not and never did work. The laughable war on drugs is a miserable failure. The money we spend on incarceration of drug offenders should be used for research and more rehabs. Addiciton is a DISEASE, NOT a moral weakness. The medical community classifies addiction as a medical disease, why is it society can not accept this and continues to stigmatize this disease and those who suffer from it? Those who suffer from addiction are loving, sensitive, big hearted people. They also have a coexisting condition that makes them more prone to addiction. They are loving people who deserve respect and love like anyone else. Please folks read up on this and stop judging the addicts and their families. This can happen in your family too.

as a mother my heart is breaking because these children do not see the pain they are putting us through.

They put us through pain yes, but they too suffer greatly. They do not intentionally cause their family all the pain they do. They are in such a dark place and in so much pain themselves, they don't realize the pain those who love them are suffering..

I couldn't agree with you more. You truly understand. If you haven't been personally affected by addiction, I would be surprised. Those of us who were lucky enough to get our children back may also hear your sentiments from them. And you're right. Addicts are good people! No one should lock the door on them. Their lives are at stake.

I didn't see what the girl died from, I am assuming drugs by the posts. Being a mom of an addict, all I can say is I live in fear everyday for that dreaded phone call. I didn't raise my child around drugs, I didn't raise him to be like this. I am hurt, embarrassed & scared. I've had him overdose, had him in rehab, he just can't fight this demon. I now have no where to turn but only to pray. How can you get thru to a loved one? I have tried everything. He 's been in rehab, jail & mental unit. I never in a million years would imagine my child who is now 28 would be doing these things. I have wanted to be a vigilante, I have threatened dealers & physicians, only to be laughed at. i feel like I am one person who wants to save not only my son but all people who have this demon. Sad truth is I can't. I mourn for this family. There needs to be limits on Dr's who prescribe meds that are so bogusly needed. Crack down on drug dealers. jail doesn't help. Ads don't work. We need another route. If anyone has a plan I am willing to help.

Dede and Nancy, I lost my 28 year old son the day before his 29th birthday of an accidental drug overdose. It has been 2 1/2 years of pain and misery and heart ache. I run a grief support group called GRASP..Grief Recovery After Substance Passing. in Joliet. After I lost my son I found there was no one who understood my pain. My son and I were judged. I found out about GRASP and started my own chapter in Joliet. Unfortunately there are several Mom's who like me lost a child to drugs. We understand one another and support each other, NOT judge like others do to us. For those who have children suffering from addiction, I know and feel your pain and will pray your loved ones are one of the lucky ones to make it. I don't know how this poor girl passed, but after reading the first post I assumed it must be drugs. My heart and prayers are with this precious girl and her family.

No affense but you people are cruel. This is someone's beautiful daughter. Who cares how she died, the point is she was taken way to early from her parents & family. You should be more worried about them instead of how she died.

I agree with Kim. I am a friend of the family and I think it's pretty rude to assume what happened to her. Kaitlyn and her family need peace not cruel assumptions!

What's cruel about discussing what went wrong so hopefully others can learn?
I'm a Provi alum and a parent with kids heading toward Provi, so yes- I'm interested in hearing about the perils in our society.
I'm sure other parents would like to know if there is ultra-pure heroin or bad Bath Salts (or whatever the hell is cool) on the streets.
Serious condolences to the parents, but from the comments we only left to make assumptions from the bits and pieces. Don't hold false heros, tragic error is just that.

I could happen at any school. Lincoln Way, Lockport, Sandburg. All I am saying is it's not fair to assume when the actual person or family has not confirmed the cause. Peace out.

Okay it is not cruel to be interested i suppose but to be perfectly frank Kait was my best friend and reading this just really ticked me off! You don't even know this girl or her family so why don't you stay out of it! Stop poking around, making stuff up, and assuming things because barely anyone has the facts straight! If you don't know her you have no right to be posting stuff about her on the internet other then offering your condolences to her parents and siblings!

I understand the shock, regret, and maybe even anger many face with this sudden death. I hope that those leaving comments on drug education and how the "young generation" is not getting the message of evil drugs give Kaitlyn the respect and dignity she deserves by keeping the comment section free of their personal opinions. There is a time for everything, and this is not the time to be political. My heart goes out to Kaitlyn's family and friends. Death is always tragic. Know that the Providence Community is praying for you. Those leaving somewhat inappropriate comments should do the same with reverence. We will miss you Kaitlyn.

so sad, and such a waste of a beautiful person. She was always so pleasant to me and would come up to me at all the masses, just a shame gone too soon, I hope this is a wake up call for all these teens dabbling with herione.......it is lethal.......my heart goes out to her mother and siblings in this difficult time. May she be at peace........addiction is a sickness.......hope more people will become aware of the warning signs and get help
